So Long Babylon
©2006 Gibbens/Weston

You had it put about that your were paradise,
You kept it to yourself about the slaves.
While half the world was bringing you their merchandise
You dug half the world their early graves.
So long, Babylon.
You made your mark on everyone
While you were reaching for the sky.
Babylon, bye bye.

Ships as tall as towers fill your harbour quays
While iron armies march on a distant plain,
Palaces of glass are filled with laughing ease,
Ditches in the south dammed up with slain.
So long, Babylon…

You thought you had forever, all you had was time,
Time to be redeemed or be condemned,
Time to draw your hand back from your crime
And lend it to a new Jerusalem.
So long, Babylon…

A string of pearls lies scatttered in an empty square,
Baby rats are born in a banknote nest.
You were this world’s glory and this world’s despair
Till the trumpet blew, and you know the rest.
So long, Babylon…

Babylon so long, so long, so long…
