Lay for the Day
18th November

Steamboat Willie, the first cartoon with a fully synchronised soundtrack, premiered in New York on this day in 1928. Its hero was a mouse by the name of Mickey, who became perhaps the most widely recognised fictional character in the world.

From the book of Praises:

79. Of Underground Mice

Your small world’s hard
Steel and noise
Grey as the filth that gathers
Under steel and noise

As you survive there
Steel and noise
I can here

Scutter from the warbling rails
And rumble
Lunch on litter
Live by what we scatter

The deafening wheels
Are not so definitely real
As underground mice
